Origin of the name
A yagura is a tall timber structure — a castle watchtower, a festival stage, the drum tower that announces a sumo tournament. The woman held aloft is that tower. The alternative names run the same way: tomari-zemi is a cicada clinging to a trunk, mikoshi is a portable shrine carried shoulder-high, and the modern nickname ekiben comes from station vendors hawking lunch boxes slung from the neck. Every one of them is about carrying something held high.
Tips
The most physically demanding position in the repertoire. Lift with your legs, not your back — spine straight, knees bent — or you will regret it tomorrow.
