Origin of the name
Moon-viewing is Japan's oldest nocturnal pleasure — sung by Heian-era (794–1185) aristocrats, made a commoner's outing in the Edo period (1603–1868). Lying nested together, both partners can gaze at the same moon through the same window; among the forty-eight, few names are this poetic. The alternative name, Kakekuzure, is said to come from the image of lovers sinking down with the bedding still draped over them.
